Environmental Pollution around the coastal area of Karachi is a serious threat to the area’s biodiversity.

Around 5.5 million tons of sewage containing inorganic and organic contaminants is thrown into the sea.

This was told by the Minister of Maritime Affairs- Syed Ali Haider Zaidi while giving briefing to the Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs on Wednesday.

According to a press release issued by Director Media of the National Assembly, the 4th meeting of the Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs was held in Committee Room No. 7, Parliament House, at 10:00 am under the Chairmanship of MNA Mir Amer Ali Khan Magsi.

The minister for maritime affairs told the panel that around 5.5 million tonnes of sewage containing inorganic and organic contaminants is thrown into the sea. Recently due to an accident 40 tons of sludge was dumped in the sea, an enquiry is being conducted into this issue, he said.

He further added that Sindh Government in collaboration with Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Port Qasim can play an important role in resolving the issues of waste dumping and the uplift of economy of Karachi and Province of Sindh. Boards of KPT and Port Qasim has been completed and made functional, he added.

The committee was informed that Gwadar is going to be the commercial hub in future but issues such as connectivity through Rail, supply of water and energy needs to be resolved. The issue of fishermen has also been taken care off by bringing changes in the East Bay Expressway in Gwadar. Brotherly countries Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar have shown interest in setting oil refinery and related industry in Gwadar, the panel was told.

According to press release the committee also asked the Ministry to direct KPT to resolve the issue of traffic jam under Karimabad Flyover, Karachi by seeking help from the Government of Sindh.

The meeting was attended by Syed Ali Haider Zaidi Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs and MNAs, Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon, Muhammad Yaqoob Shaikh, Faheem Khan, Saif Ur Rehman, Abdul Shakoor Shad, Mir Khan Muhmmad Jamali, Nuzhat Pathan,  Lal Chand, Usama Qadri, Azhar Qayyum Nahra,  Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh,  Jam Abdul Karim Bijar, Abdul Qadir Patel, Kamal Uddin,  Begum Tahira Bukhari, Kesoo Mal Kheeal Das, Secretary Maritime Affair and senior officials of the ministry.
