Heavy rains disrupt Dawn’s publication on Friday

Repercussions of heavy rains in Karachi go on and on and there is no end to it. The fall of heavy rains in the metropolitan city also severely affected the publication of Dawn which is the leading English daily of Pakistan.
The Dawn could not be printed today (Friday) due to heavy and continuous rainfall in the city and its head office is currently flooded with rainwater.
The newspaper head office, situated at Haroon House, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road, Karachi is badly flooded with the rainwater and it has become inaccessible.
Many parts of the city are also facing breakdown of electricity and staff of the many media organizations couldn’t contribute to their respective organizations because of facing issues due to collapse of electricity in many areas.
“My cellphone battery is about to die as I don’t have electricity at my home for the past 24 hours,” stated a senior media person working for a prominent publication.
Heavy rains in Pakistan has already killed around 90 persons, mostly in Sindh and it has severely disrupted life in Karachi which is the economic hub of the country.
At least 41 people have been killed in Karachi in rain-related incidents during the latest spell of monsoon that started on Tuesday and broke a 90-year record.
Karachi at the moment is flooded with monsoon rainwater and it seems that there is no drainage system in the metropolis.
Even the posh localities are flooded with the rainwater and movement of public has been severely affected.
The government of Sindh has set up a helpline for residents of rain-affected areas at Karachi’s Commissioner House.

Moreover, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced a public holiday on Friday after the devastating torrential rains. Hyderabad was also badly affected, with the army rescuing people in boats.
All government, semi-government and private organizations will remain closed Friday. However, offices of essential services such as local bodies, health department, the water board, PDMA and revenue will remain open.
According to Met Office this monsoon has broken a 90-year record in the month of August. As much as 484mm (19 inches) have fallen this month.
