Veteran journalist Idrees Bakhtiar passed away because of a cardiac arrest on Wednesday in Karachi.

Bakhtiar briefly remained admitted to a Karachi hospital after he suffered a cardiac arrest. He was 74.

According to the sources Idrees Bakhtiar was admitted to the National Institute of Cardio Vascular Disease (NICVD) two days back after he complained of chest pain. Later he suffered two heart attacks while undergoing angioplasty.

The late senior journalist had served as the head of Editorial Committee of Geo News.

He had previously been affiliated with the BBC and Herald among several other publications. He served journalism for over 50 years. Bakhtiar was a senior member of Karachi Press Club (KPC).

Born in Ajmer, Rajasthan, in 1944, his family migrated to Pakistan soon after partition and settled in Hyderabad, Sindh, where he had his education from school to university.

Expressing sorrow over Bakhtiar’s demise, President Arif Alvi said: “What a sad departure. My dear friend whom I had known for decades, the nice courteous journalist Idrees Bakhtiar has passed away. May his soul rest in peace and Allah grant his family the strength to bear this loss,” the president wrote on Twitter.

Bakhtiar’s funeral prayer were offered on Thursday after Zohar prayers at Masjide Faheem, Waseem Bagh in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 13-D.

The KPC President Imtiaz Khan Faran, Secretary Arman Sabir and other members of the Governing Body expressed their deep shock and grief over the sad demise of Idrees Bakhtair.

Idrees Bakhtiar was among the leaders of journalist community who worked under different capacities by representing KUJ (D), PFUJ  for the welfare and betterment of the community. He along with the then leader of All Pakistan Newspapers Confederation Shafiuddin Ashraf (who passed away in 2018) and others represented several times the newspapers workers and journalists in fixing wages and other benefits for the Wag Board Award. He was a very popular among young journalists due to his kind attitude towards juniors.
