Senior consultant and ENT surgeon, Dr Qaisar Sajjad, has stressed on the need for precautionary steps to avoid nosebleeds during the prevailing cold and dry weather spell.
Speaking to this scribe, Dr Sajjad highlighted the surge in cases of nasal problems, especially nasal bleeding, in winters. He warned that the chances of development of diseases including chest congestion and bronchitis are greatly increased by dry weather, which often proves dangerous for senior citizens and children. “Nasal vessels are more prone to bursting during dry and cold weather. In such cases, the nose should be pinched till the bleeding stops but it is essential that the patient is taken to a hospital if the bleeding persists,” said Dr Sajjad.
He advised people with nasal issues to ensure proper moisturizing of their nasal cavities at night with petroleum jelly or other products. “A majority of nosebleed cases during winters occur at night, therefore, proper care is a must. Patients with high blood pressure are also more susceptible to nasal bleeding during the prevailing season,” he said, while also highlighting the need for special attention by asthma patients during winters.
Dr Sajjad also shed light on the importance of a healthy lifestyle for increased body immunity. He identified sleeping and eating patterns, along with proper clothing and protection during winters, as the major factors. “Sleeping early is essential for a sound, healthy body, as has been taught in Islam and proved by medical experts. Junk food must be avoided if one hopes to boost immunity. Cold foods should also be refrained from in the winter and intake of warm liquids, such as soups, should be increased,” said Dr Sajjad, while also highlighting the need for increased water consumption.
Stressing the need for proper clothing, he said that full-sleeved shirts and warm clothes must be worn, as they afford protection and enable one to enjoy the short winters of Karachi.
He also spoke of the need to maintain minimal difference between the temperature inside and outside houses.
