Seven teenage Hindu girls forcefully converted in two months

PHRO strongly criticizes GoS for its failure to protect rights of religious minorities

The number of forceful conversion of faith of teenage Hindu girls is on rise in Sindh and so far seven girls have already been forcefully converted in just two months starting from February to March this year.

The two of these young girls are claimed to be abducted from Karachi and rest of the cases are being reported from other cities of Sindh.

Startling revelations into this effect were made by chairman of People’s Human Rights Organization (PHRO) Ihsan Ali also shared the details of these incidents which took place between February and March 2019.

Addressing a press conference at PHRO’s headquarters in Karachi on Friday he also strongly criticized the Government of Sindh and held it responsible for its failure to stop these forceful conversion.

“Disappearance of these girl children and the denial of their fundamental freedom of religion have caused great anguish to the victims and their families,” he stated.

The details of abduction and forceful conversion of these Hindu girls as provided by PHRO is as under:

KOMAL MEGHWAR: Komal Meghwar aged around 14 was kidnapped from Golimar, Karachi and she was forcefully converted. She is permanent resident of Tando Allahyar. The National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) clearly shows that her age is 14 years. The date of birth of this girl is March 20, 2004.

MALA MENGHWAR: Mala Menghwar is around 16 years old and has allegedly been abducted from village Jam Khan Pitafi near Jadho town. Sindh Minister for Minorities Affairs Hari Ram Kishori Lal took notice of the abduction and directed the SSP Badin to register an FIR of the incident immediately and also take necessary steps to protect the girl’s family.

SONIA MANGHWAR: Sonnia Manghwar aged around 14 was kidnapped from village Tando Yousif near Hyderabad. According to the parents, Shambho Bheel and Sharmiti, they used to work on daily wages for Hazrat Khan Pathan. Due to medical emergency they took loan amounting to Rs12,000 from Hazrat Khan Pathan but failed to return the amount. The person in question started threatening the family members to get back his money and afterwards he kidnaped Sonia and taken her to an unknown place.

PERMILA MAHESHWARI: aged around 16 and she is the resident of Girl’s College Road Kahchi Muhalla in Tando Mohammad Khan. According to First Information Report (FIR) which was registered under section 365/B & 34 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the complaint of her father, Permila Maheshwari was kidnaped during early morning on March 15 this year. He alleged that Bilwal son of Noor Muhammad along with four other accomplices kidnapped her.

SONIA: Sonia aged around 15 or16, the resident of Khamosh Colony near Haji Mureed Goth in the jurisdiction of Gulbahar Police Station Karachi went missing from early morning on March 10, 2019.

RENA & REVEENA: Two sisters, Rena’s and Raveenawere’s faith was converted at Darga Barchundi Sharif in Ghotki. As per Dargah girls had wanted to convert to Islam since long as they were influenced by its teachings. Although they are underage, according to the PHRO they were married instantly.

The family of these girls registered FIR with local police against abduction and forceful marriages of these girls. They are 14 and 16 years old, as per the FIR and under Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act every citizen under 18 falls under definition of child and can’t be married,

Brother of Reena and Raveena along with the local Hindu Community in Ghotki protested their abduction on the occasion of Holi Festival but the police tried to dismiss the matter by citing a video of the two sisters in which they claim they have been willfully converted.

Ihsan ali further added that schedule caste Hindus comprise 80% of the total Hindu population living in Sindh and they are mostly peasants’ and labourers. They have been working landlords for generations. These landlords are considered supreme in the locality and exercise complete control over the lives of these peasants.

He said the Sindh government has failed to adopt policy for the protection of Hindu children from forced conversions and sexual abuse.
