Coronavirus Lockdown: Special transportation facilities for labourers demanded for mango season

Pak Chronicle Report

Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporter, Importer and Merchant Association (PFVA) in a letter to Chief Minister Punjab has appealed for arranging special  transportation facilities for labourers from Punjab to Sindh for mango season.

In a communique the association invited the attention of CM towards an important issue revolving around the export of mangoes.

It stated that the mango crop in the province of Sindh gets ready for plucking the fruit by first week of May while in Punjab it starts after a gap of a month i.e June.

The labourer for the Sindh province is provided by the province of Punjab (Bahawalpur, Multan, Muzzaffargarh) and they get actively engaged in the process of plucking, grading, packing and loading the processed mango boxes into trucks.

The PFVA stated that the government of Pakistan has already permitted the labourers working in forms and orchards in villages by following SOPs issued in this context. Since the railways and public transport are not operating due to country-wide lockdown hence sending labourers from Punjab to Sindh during the mango season over there poses serious limitation. If the labourers from Punjab do not reach to Sindh during the time when mango crop is ready, besides affecting growers it would badly hit the export of mango as well and the economy of the country would be further weakened against the challenge of coronavirus.

“It’s imminent that during the stressful condition we shall keep a balance between the lockdown and economic activities so that we can steer the country out of this natural catastrophe,” the letter stated.

The association requested that permission may kindly be granted to operate special transports to carry labourers from Punjab to Sindh.

This is pertinent to mention here that mango industry is around Rs100 billion which include export of mangoes and value added products of it.
