[wp_ad_camp_1] It’s horrible to ignore the right to life
By Zaib Azkaar Hussain
In a tragic incident eight members of a family were killed and set on fire in the name ‘honour killings’ on Sunday night at Hassanabad area of Multan.
Since the perfect laws protecting the lives and restraining killings under the pretext of ‘honour’ have not been formulated as yet, the killers feel no legal threat or fear in eliminating lives; especially of women in Pakistan.
According to Rescue officials, six of the deceased were gunned down while two of them were burnt alive inside a room.
Multan’s Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) was reported to have said that Ajmal allegedly killed his wife and seven in-laws over the honour issue, adding that the assailant, along with his brother and father Zafar, broke into his in-laws’ house and opened fire at his wife, mother-in-law and other family members. Resultantly six family members were killed on-the-spot.
Later, it was informed that the suspects allegedly locked two others in a room and set them on fire.
According to the police, Ajmal had returned from Saudi Arabia few days earlier and he had suspicions about character of his wife. It’s shameful that the killers not only killed the poor wife but did not spare the in-laws as well.
Two of the alleged assailants have been arrested, while police were trying to apprehend a brother of the accused, who had fled the scene during the raid. This is a so terrible and ironic incident giving the bad name to the country especially in the eye of the international community in the wake of human right situation. It is high time to take the issue of protection of human rights and ensure the effective implementation and creation of awareness of the key right to life.
