Pak Chronicle Report
Abbottabad
Government High School (GHS) Sherwan continues to follow the tradition of its quality education in the area for the past 84 years.
Established in January 1936 as Middle School in the era of British imperialism, the school has been producing batches students who earned name and repute in different walk of life.
Sherwan is a town of District Abbottabad, located in a beautiful valley, 35 kilometre west of Abbottabad.
According to some accounts, Muhammad Mahboob son of Jalal Khan was its first student. The maiden student of the school, Muhammad Mahboob was Awan by caste who belonged to Modbuffa Kalan.
GHS Sherwan in its initial enrollment also had students who belonged to Hindu and Sikh communities which were also living in this area in large number. However, after partition of India in 1947 entire of these communities migrated to India and settled over there.
Bhoj Raj son of Nand Ram got admission in 7th grade of the school on January 10, 1936. He was Brahman by caste. Hari Ram son of Chait Ram got admission in the 8th grade which was the highest grade of the school during that period.
According some records this school was basically a co-education institute as it also had female students. This is pertinent to mention here that even after inception of Pakistan little attention was paid to the education of girls in the area of Hazara especially in those areas which were situated in remote and mountainous areas of major cities like Abbottabad, Mansehra and Haripur. Later on in
70’s and 80’s of the last century the idea of providing education to girls also flourished and now these areas also hold marvelous literacy rate in terms of feminine education.
However, GHS Sherwan was blessed with female students as well who were part of it when the school started providing education.
Sundar Devi daughter of Hari Chand, Kapoor by caste, Bhajan Kor, daughter of Ram Siran, caste Kapoor of Sherwan Kalan and Sarochna Devi daughter of Parthami Chand of Kapoor family were amongst the initial female students of Government School Sherwan. Sarochna Devi was also the resident of Sherwan Kalan.
This school was upgraded to High School level on June 15, 1950 and Chanbahar son of Badri Sarwar Hussain got the credit to become its first student of secondary level. Chanbahar was Tanoli by caste and the resident of Sherwan Khurd.
GHS Sherwan continues to be a brilliant institute of the area and after 16 years it would be celebrating its 100 years celebration of its foundation.
